What Year Is This Globe? is a free game. The maps come from two research datasets, credited below.

icr.ethz.ch/data/cshapes
Licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0. For this game the borders were simplified, some names were changed to the forms used at the time, and some capital cities were corrected. The resulting file, data/globes-cshapes.js, is shared under the same licence. CShapes ends in 2019; no borders on this map have changed since, so the last globe also covers the years after.
Borders for 1800, 1815 and 1880, and the land backdrop
Historical Basemaps by André Ourednik and contributors. github.com/aourednik/historical-basemaps
Licensed under the GNU General Public License v3. The data is a work in progress, so borders and names are approximate. Simplified and renamed for this game in data/globes-historical-basemaps.js, shared under the same licence. There is no free worldwide border data for 1816–1877, so the game has no globes for those years.
Source files
The scripts that turn the datasets into the game's map files are published with the site:
- source/build_maps.py (Historical Basemaps → source/maps.js)
- source/build_globes.py (builds both files in
data/) - source/build_capitals.py (capital city corrections and the 1800–1880 capitals)
- source/CREDITS.txt (how to rebuild)
Privacy
The game uses no cookies and no advertising trackers. Your streak, stats and progress are kept in your own browser on this device.
When you finish the daily set, your five scores, the date and a random code for this device are sent to our scoreboard so we can show the daily averages. The code is not linked to your name, email or any account, and only running totals for each day are kept, not individual results.
This game is not affiliated with or endorsed by ETH Zürich or the Historical Basemaps project. Map borders are simplified and approximate, and borders in disputed areas are shown as recorded in the source data, not as a statement on any dispute.
