About When in the World

When in the World is a free daily history and geography game. Every day you get five globes, each showing the world as it really looked at some point since 1800: its borders, country names, colonies, capitals and city names. Spin the globe, zoom in, and guess the year.

Each day mixes one map from each era of modern history: the age of empires, the world wars, decolonisation, the Cold War and today. Clues are everywhere: the U.S.S.R. or Austria-Hungary, striped colonies across Africa and Asia, or cities like Leningrad, Constantinople and Bombay. After each guess you learn exactly what dates that map.

The maps come from the CShapes 2.0 research dataset (ETH Zürich) and Historical Basemaps. It's like a daily geography quiz and a history timeline game in one: no sign-up, nothing to install, and it works on phones and computers.
